There are several factors I use to judge a city or town and obviosly these are based purely on what is important to me. I always look at culture - i.e. is there a good art museum; open - is it open to diversity and not scary religious judgmental; i.e. can my gay friends live there?; are there good, interesting restaurants? And most importantly 1. Is there a great public pool 2. Good trails to run 3. A good Dog Park. I already knew that Santa Fe had a few good art museums and galleries (maybe 100!); a few good restaurants (maybe 1000); diversity. And today I learned that Santa Fe has amazing running trails and an amazing dog park. I began my day running 12 miles along the river bed on a rail trail - 5:45am, 34 degrees, 7,000 feet...and it was absolutely beautiful. I watched the sunrise while running at the top of the mesa overlooking Santa Fe. And then I ended the day watching Hank run with his other Bernese Mountain Dog buddies at the world's best dog park. We have visited dog parks in almost 42 states and this is by far the best we have ever been to. Again, at the top of a mesa overlooking the city is a city dog park of 40 unfenced acres and the dogs can just run to their heart's content. Hank was in HEAVEN and now is dreaming and snoring loudly on the bed....Until next time.

I like your list a LOT, and can see why my lil' ol' Utah town didn't make the cut! I have been so frustrated here, and wanting a drastic change (move) as well but no idea where to go and with my kids, not feeling like I can leave. Have always read good things about Santa Fe, so good for you for sharing its joys. Colorado was another one I'd considered. And Oregon. I'm glad you are having fun exploring your future happy place. And for sharing the process with us. Fun! Hugs.
