This morning is sit in a Residence Inn in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hank and I got on the road again on Saturday and we took the Blue Highways on this journey. Blue Highways are the roads less traveled. William Least Heat Moon wrote a wonderful account of his journey on these highways in the late 70's and thus coined the phrase "Blue Highways" when referring to our choices in life. Blue Highways are literally the roads on the map with blue dots and they indicate the view is a bit different from here. And I think this is appopo for my life right now and the journey Hank and I are on. The view is a bit different from here but I like what I see. On this leg of the journey our highlight was staying with Carol and Archie Kelley, and had I not been open I would have missed a wonderful experience. Carol is my best friend Jay's mom and Archie is her wonderful husband. Archie is 91 years old going on 60 and he is literally a nuclear physicist - what a brain! Well I was driving through Arizona and planning on staying in a motel 6 when Jay said stay with my mom. I was hesitant to bother them, but glad Jay encouraged me because Hank and I had a fantastic respite and connected with wonderful friends. Arch made fast friends with Hank by feeding him the bones from that night's lamb chops and Hank made fast friends with the 20 year old cat Julie by pouncing on her! What a wonderful thing to drive across the desert for 4 hours and into a warm and welcoming home with a glass of wine and lamb chops waiting at 9pm. And Archie then redirected us off of the main highway and onto the Blue Highways through Arizona and into New Mexico. Yesterday we drove the Beeline highway through the White Mountains of Arizona and saw some wonderful lightening storms off in the distance. It was a long, but beautiful drive and the view was different from there. May we all keep traveling the Blue Highways in our lives....
