A junk food craving...today begins a long two day trek toward St. George, Utah and my friends Pam and Neil. One thing I have not done on this trip is the junk food attack. I have been a good triathlete and filled a cooler of fruits and veggies from Whole Foods and Farmer's markets, but I have not broken down and had a Doritos or twinkies attack. So as I prepare to drive a very long, desolate stretch of I-80 through Nebraska and Eastern Colorado I wonder should I allow my willpower to breakdown while at a truck stop and get the giant bucket of buffalo wings or the double size bag of nacho Doritos? And while on the subject, I have discovered two things while in Cracker Barrel restaurants....where the political divide exists in this country: 1. In the middle of America in places like Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. Just eavesdrop on a Sunday morning breakfast conversation at a Cracker Barrel off of an Interstate in middle America and my friends on both coasts, you will suddently understand why our country is so divided politically and where the voters who voted for the person you didn't live...
2. I learned why obesity is such a problem in the United States and where the extremely obese reside and eat. Not to say Cracker Barrels make people fat, I eat at them almost exlusively while on Interstates, and although the waiters look at my like I have three heads when I order a garden salad with no cheese, bacon (at Cracker Barrel the salad comes with bacon) or dressing, I manage to always leave eating less than 200 calories. However, just watch the people walking through the door and there is our obesity epidemic in the United States. Can I have a side of gravy with that???
